Battle of Quatre Bras

The opening major engagement of the Waterloo campaign. Wellington's forces including the Brunswick Field-Corps held off Marshal Ney's attack, suffering heavy casualties including the mortal wounding of the Duke of Brunswick.

Account of the Battle

On 16 June 1815 the Brunswick infantry, cavalry, and artillery marched hard from Brussels to reinforce Wellington. As the main body deployed, the Duke of Brunswick was shot from his horse and died shortly after. Despite this the Brunswick troops fought on, helping hold the crossroads until nightfall.

Historical Significance

Quatre Bras was the costliest engagement in the history of the Schwarze Schar — the death of the Duke was only overcome by the discipline of the surviving officers and men.
