Battle of Tordesillas

Brunswick contingent elements attempted to force a crossing of the Douro river as part of Wellington's central Spain operations following Salamanca.

Account of the Battle

At Tordesillas the Brunswick skirmishers and light cavalry operated as part of a larger Allied force attempting to cross the Douro. French resistance proved stronger than anticipated and the Allies withdrew.

Historical Significance

Tordesillas tested the Field-Corps in the demanding conditions of the Peninsular theatre, experience that paid dividends at Quatre Bras and Waterloo.
