Battle of Halberstadt

The first significant engagement of the Field-Corps — a swift raid that routed the Westphalian garrison and captured supplies before the French could respond.

Account of the Battle

After the collapse of Austria's campaign, the Duke of Brunswick led roughly 2,300 men north through Saxony, striking Halberstadt on 29 July 1809. The surprise attack overwhelmed the Westphalian defenders and gave the Field-Corps a much-needed early victory.

Historical Significance

Halberstadt demonstrated that even a small, well-led force could penetrate deep into enemy-held territory and achieve tactical surprise.
