Battle of Olper

A hard-fought rearguard action during the withdrawal to the North Sea coast, allowing the main body to embark safely for England.

Account of the Battle

At Olper the pursuing forces caught the rearguard, forcing a sharp engagement. The Linie and Leib battalions held long enough for the artillery and cavalry to disengage, allowing the entire Field-Corps to embark at Elsfleth.

Historical Significance

Olper proved the discipline and cohesion of the Field-Corps under extreme pressure.
