Braunschweig Artillerie

Fire support — softening enemy formations with cannon fire before the infantry assault.

Historical Background

The Braunschweig Artillerie operated the field guns that gave the regiment its long-range striking power. Napoleonic artillery crews were highly specialised, trained to load, aim, and fire their pieces rapidly under intense pressure and sometimes even during hand to hand combat with attackers.

Notable Actions

  • ▸ Provided fire support at the Battle of Quatre Bras
  • ▸ Exchanged counter-battery fire with French guns at Waterloo
  • ▸ Operated horse artillery in support of the Hussaren during the 1809 campaign
